Shane Wareham of Adult Literacy Education & Consulting (ALEC) and the SMART Learning Café picked up the Exceptional Adult Educator Award last week at the REAP Adult Learner Week celebrations. The award, which was presented by Mayor Rick Cooper and National MP Louise Upston recognises the achievements of local adult education tutors each year.

“Shane has provided valuable service as a literacy and numeracy tutor for Adult Literacy Education & Consulting since we kicked off our pilot programme last year. He has prevailed in uncertain circumstances, an unstable funding -environment, and at times with limited resources”, said ALEC manager Graeme Smith.

“He’s currently nearing completion of his National Certification in Adult Literacy Education (Vocational/Workplace) with ALEC and is investigating ways in which he can embed literacy and numeracy into our SMART programme which includes digital literacy in the form of the International Computer Driving Licence.

“He has also explored, and continues to explore, ways in which his broad background including retail, customer service, and various trades can provide context for real-world literacy and numeracy training covering a vast range of hands-on tasks for learners from measuring up car parks to walking the streets analysing window displays to calculating the volumes of fishtanks.

“In 2010 Shane is managing ALEC’s new site at 57 Kaimanawa Street – the SMART Learning Cafe, making cups of coffee, administering the new TEC literacy and numeracy diagnostic tools, and generally running things to a high degree of competence along with colleague Karen Sears.

“We submitted his name for a commendation because we wanted him to know that we appreciate his work and that he is well on the way to becoming an outstanding adult educator.
